The mark lands on the words
Gather a line with your finger in the manuscript you are reading and the color lands on the words. It used to sit above them, a bar of amber in the blank air over the sentence, so a passage you had marked read as something laid across the page rather than as your own mark on its words. Now it comes down on the letters. The space between the lines stays clear.
